eyebrow pulling

Individuals who suffer from trichotillomania will often pull out large patches of hair on their head, and even their eyebrows. The eyebrows are an especially vulnerable spot, as the hair on the eyebrows is enticing because of the traditionally ticker texture of the hair on the eyebrows. The eyebrows are very accessible and are a common place for individuals with trichotillomania to pull hair from. The many nerve endings on the face make the sensation of pulling out an eyebrow especially appealing, as it is often a more rewarding spot than the pulling hair from the top of the head or other areas of the body.

Treatment for Eyebrow Loss

Pulling out hair from the eyebrow area is very common in trichotillomania sufferers and is easily noticed by others. When an individual does not have eyebrows, it is very obvious. Female sufferers of trichotillomania can more easily disguise hair loss from the eyebrow region because they are able to pencil in, or draw false eyebrows. When a male sufferer pulls out his eyebrows, he is unable to disguise it as easily. Permanent tattooing of the eyebrows has also become a very popular trend and can be used to disguise absent eyebrows as well.

Progression of Trichotillomania

When an individual begins to pull out hair, they do so starting in small areas. Gradually, as the nerve endings begin to dull after repeated pulling, a sufferer will move to new areas on the body to regain the same sensation as initially felt when the hair pulling first started. This often leads to other areas on the body, such as the eyebrows. Pulling out hair from the eyebrow area is typically a progression from the initial hair pulling from the head because of the heightened sensation on the face. Eyebrow loss is a good indicator that an individual has trichotillomania for a while, and is unable to stop pulling out their hair.
