I need help for my niece

I am a concerned Aunt of my 8 yr old niece who has been pulling since she was 6. My sister is in denial and thinks it is a phase and is not facing the fact that this is becoming very bad. My niece has now pulled the opposite of a mohawk, the clinical social worker she goes to has advised my sister to shave her head. Not sure this is the answer, has anyone experience this? I have located an experienced LPC that I am trying to get her into, she has been counseling for over 15 yrs in the area of trich in kids and women. What about meds? It is definitly anxitey and stress onset, she sister and her husband both suffer from severe mental health, as this is one reason I can not believe my sister is not dealing with this. I feel like my hands are tied, any advice is great.

shaving the head is very

shaving the head is very useful. it will stop her from pulling simply because the hair isn't THERE. if the head is shaved, she CAN'T pull her hair out. It may seem drastic, but it is sometimes very helpful. sometimes the shaving will have to be repeated until the urges stop.

Hi just reading all your

Hi just reading all your worries,i am 39 and still find difficult to say the word but been pulling since 14,have 2 girls and worried about second as she plays with hair as a comfort as i did as a child.Somethings happened to me as a child and there was a build up and as no one listened i felt this was my stress release,i feel excited when i initially do it and after a terrible come down when i see all the hair on the ground and gone so depressed and yet promise myself over and over to stop - CANT ! being getting hair extensions last 10 yrs to hide cost me £500 every 4 months, the h-dresser think its partial alopecia as same places all the time sides and top,but i think she knows!i feel nobody understood me over the years and was all alone like a freak, thank god for the internet and reading about others like me and girls half my age whom obviously bewildered by this!came from a normal and very good looking family with no history of this so obviously this was weird,i was weird and still pushed under the carpet, but my girls now 10 & 5 and asking why i never ware my hair down. You know kids will tell all in school etc ,so innocent ,so a white lie until there older is okay. This is my story and if i can help you in any way please contact me x

I don't think shaving the hair is going to help... I've done a lot of research on this disorder and many people just have tried shaving their head already. They said that when their hair grow about an inch long, they start at it again.
